Planning just a few days in Oahu and worried you won’t see enough?

Don’t stress—I’ve got you covered. I explored the island with my big family crew (12 of us, which is basically a moving circus), and I know exactly how to make the most of a short trip.

If you’re searching for the best things to do in Oahu, Hawaii but only have three days to spare, this quick itinerary balances adventure, culture, beaches, and food so you can experience the island’s highlights without feeling rushed.

Here’s how to spend the ultimate 3 days in Oahu.

DAY ONE: HONOLULU HISTORY & SUNSET BY THE SEA

MORNING
Start your Oahu adventure with a powerful dose of history at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial.

Walk through the museum exhibits, take the boat ride to the USS Arizona Memorial, and learn about the events that shaped modern Hawaii and the world.

AFTERNOON
Head to downtown Honolulu and stroll through Iolani Palace, the only royal palace on U.S. soil.

Take time to appreciate the blend of Hawaiian and Western architecture, then explore Chinatown, just a few blocks away. Grab lunch — dim sum is a local favorite — and wander through the markets and street art.

EVENING
Make your way to Waikiki Beach for golden hour. You can take a sunset catamaran cruise or opt for a beachfront dinner with toes in the sand. Either way, it’s the perfect way to ease into island life.

DAY TWO: SOUTH SHORE SCENES & COASTAL BEAUTY

MORNING
Wake up early to beat the heat and hike to the summit of Diamond Head Crater. The views from the top are worth every step (I absolutely loved it when I was there). Bring water and wear good shoes — this isn’t a casual stroll, but it’s accessible to most fitness levels.

AFTERNOON
Cool off with a snorkel (or scuba dive!) session at Hanauma Bay, one of Oahu’s most famous marine sanctuaries. Be sure to reserve your spot in advance, as daily visitor numbers are limited to protect the reef.

EVENING
Drive along the southeastern coast, stopping at scenic spots like the Halona Blowhole and Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail. Catch the light bouncing off the cliffs and ocean — it’s one of the most photogenic stretches on the island.

DAY THREE: NORTH SHORE ADVENTURE

MORNING
Begin your day at the peaceful Byodo-In Temple in the Valley of the Temples. This replica of a 950-year-old Japanese temple is nestled in the Koʻolau Mountains and offers a serene start to the day.

AFTERNOON
Head to the North Shore, known for massive waves in winter and sea turtle sightings year-round. Stop at Laniakea Beach (aka Turtle Beach) and keep your eyes peeled for these gentle creatures basking in the sand.

Then grab lunch at the legendary Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck — don’t worry about the mess; it’s part of the experience.

EVENING
In winter (Nov–Apr), the waves on the North Shore can be dangerously high, so swimming/snorkeling might be off-limits. Instead:

  • Visit Waimea Valley for a peaceful walk through botanical gardens leading to a swimmable waterfall.
  • Or explore the surf town of Haleiwa — packed with art galleries, coffee shops, and more food trucks.
