If you’re a diver who loves critter hunting, macro photography, and underwater surprises, diving in Dauin should be at the top of your list. Trust me, I have seen it firsthand, and it’s definitely a nudibranch’s paradise.

It’s famous for its incredible biodiversity, especially for those into macro photography. Think nudibranchs in every color of the rainbow, rare frogfish, ghost pipefish, and pygmy seahorses.

The best part? The volcanic sand here makes it easier to spot these critters, especially for photographers.

Dauin is packed with dive resorts, so you’ll never run out of options. In fact, with so many to choose from, it can get a bit overwhelming to pick the right one.

But if you’re looking for a personal recommendation based on my own experience, there’s one dive center I can confidently suggest: Dive Society Dauin. I had an incredible time diving with them, not only in Dauin but also in Apo Island.

What really sets them apart for me is their commitment to ocean conservation. They’re rebuilding dying reefs and creating artificial ones, and anyone can get involved in their reef conservation projects.

I also remember diving with a local divemaster who routinely picked up bits of ocean trash (and trust me, there wasn’t much to begin with). Plus, their dive center is super organized, and their staff and team of divemasters are just awesome.

Their dive crew is fantastic, and I even brought along my non-diving family members for a snorkeling trip—six of us in total—and it ended up being one of the best snorkeling experiences my family has ever had.

1. Luca Sanctuary, Reef Village

If you’re looking for a dive spot where anything is possible, Luca Sanctuary at Reef Village is the perfect choice. 

Several artificial reef structures, including reef cones and wrecks, have been added here, transforming the area into a thriving underwater paradise.

You’ll encounter an incredible variety of marine life, from tiny macro creatures like flamboyant cuttlefish and ghost pipefish to sneaky moray eels and my favourite, green sea turtles.

With a maximum depth of just 19 meters (62 feet), Luca Sanctuary is ideal for beginner divers who want to experience diverse marine life without venturing too deep. 

If you love macro diving, you’re in for a real treat, but even if you’re more into watching reef fish and turtles, this spot won’t disappoint. 

Keep your eyes peeled for coral crabs, porcelain crabs, and the striking peacock razorfish. Whether you’re in training or simply enjoying a relaxed dive, Luca Sanctuary offers a little bit of everything.

GEAR RECOMMENDATION: Bring a muck stick to Dauin to help you stay steady without disturbing the sandy bottom, but be mindful of where you place it. Aim for bare patches and avoid touching corals or critters to keep the marine environment safe while you dive.

2. Star Village, Dive Society House Reef

If you’re staying at Sea Dream Resorts, you’ve got to check out Star Village, a house reef built by Dive Society Dauin. This unique dive site features a six-armed steel starfish structure that’s about 2 meters high and stretches 12 meters across.

I’ve seen it firsthand, and it’s like diving into a colorful underwater garden, packed with corals, reef fish, and, yes, even turtles!

At 12 meters deep, it’s perfect for beginner divers and macro photographers alike. Trust me, if you love nudibranchs, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to capture some beautiful macro shots here.

It’s an easy, relaxing dive right in front of the resort, so if you’re staying at Sea Dream Resorts, it’s literally a short walk from the shore.

There’s more to explore, too. Dive Society Dauin has added other artificial reef structures, like a thresher shark installation, placed in memory of the renowned shark researcher Dr. Erich Ritter.

Largahan is an awesome dive site that’s packed with diversity. You’ll be exploring a mix of dark sandy areas, coral gardens, and volcanic rocks—all of which make it a fantastic spot for macro diving, much like the rest of Apo Island.

If you’re into the small stuff, this is the place to be! Largahan is famous for its colorful nudibranchs and the wide variety of coral you’ll come across.

Plus, it’s not just about the critters—you might even spot green sea turtles, leatherback turtles, and hawksbill turtles cruising by.

With a max depth of 20 meters (66 feet), it’s a great dive for beginners, offering plenty to see without going too deep. Perfect for anyone who loves macro life and a chilled-out dive!

PRO TIP: Make sure to schedule a few dives at Apo Island to break up your critter-spotting with some beautiful coral reefs and a ton of turtles.

4. Baluarte, Apo Island

Baluarte, located along the western coast of Apo Island, offers a unique dive experience that shows off the island’s volcanic origins.

One of the coolest things about this spot is the constant stream of bubbles rising from the seabed, a clear sign of volcanic activity below. It’s like diving through a natural underwater hot spring!

You’ll find huge coral bommies scattered across the area, which are home to all sorts of marine life. Keep an eye out for garden eels swaying with the current, and if you’re lucky, you’ll spot sea snakes and green turtles cruising around.

With a max depth of 22 meters (72 feet), Baluarte is great for beginner divers. It’s an easy yet fascinating dive, perfect for those looking to explore Apo Island’s natural wonders.

Best Time To Dive In Dauin

Dauin is a year-round dive destination, so no matter when you visit, you’re likely to have a great experience. That said, if you’re looking for the absolute best conditions, I recommend diving between November and May.

During this time, you’ll get the best visibility, calm seas, and plenty of marine life activity. It’s also the dry season, so you’ll avoid most of the rain, which can sometimes affect visibility.

Marine life is abundant all year, but between March and May, you might have a better chance of spotting larger species like whale sharks and even more turtles.

Keep in mind that this is also the peak season, so dive resorts and spots can get busier.

If you prefer a quieter experience, June to October is the rainy season but still offers good diving, especially for muck divers who aren’t too concerned about visibility. Plus, fewer crowds mean more peaceful dives!

Overall, no matter when you choose to visit, Dauin delivers some of the most diverse and exciting underwater encounters. Just plan according to what kind of experience you’re looking for, and you’ll be in for a great adventure!

One of my family members stayed here and highly recommends it, especially for the great value you get for the price.

Reaching Dauin is fairly easy, with a few travel options to suit your budget and preference. The most convenient way is to fly into Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport, which is about 30 minutes away from Dauin.

Flights from Manila to Dumaguete typically range from $27 to $70 USD (₱1,500 to ₱4,000 PHP), depending on how early you book and the season​. If you’re coming from Cebu, expect one-way flight prices between $22 and $85 USD, with several flights operating daily​.

Once you land, resorts often provide airport transfers, which is the easiest and safest option, especially if you arrange it in advance.

For a more budget-friendly option, you can take a ferry from Cebu to Dumaguete.

The OceanJet fast ferry takes about 5 hours and costs around ₱1,700 to ₱2,600 PHP ($30-$47 USD), while the Cokaliong RORO ferry offers a cheaper but longer 7-hour trip with fares starting at ₱480 PHP ($9 USD)​. After arriving at the Dumaguete port, a quick taxi or tricycle ride can take you to Dauin.
