Participate in a Reef Conservation Project

Have you ever wanted to make a lasting impact on the environment during your travels? In Dauin, you can sponsor an artificial coral reef through the reef conservation project at Dive Society Dauin.

This hands-on experience lets you help build marine habitats using specially designed octagon-shaped concrete forms. You’ll mix the concrete, pour it into molds, and even inscribe your name on the structure before it sets, creating a personal connection to the reef you’re helping to build.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Dauin, Philippines?

In Dauin, you can pretty much dive all year round, but the peak season (and the driest) is from January to May. This period offers the most pleasant weather for outdoor activities, with sunny days and calm seas perfect for diving and beach outings.

During these months, underwater visibility is at its best, making it ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving. Additionally, the absence of rain means fewer interruptions to your travel plans and more opportunities to explore the natural beauty of the area.

However, if you prefer fewer crowds and don’t mind the occasional rain shower, visiting during the off-peak season can also be rewarding.

The lush greenery is at its peak during these months, and you might find lower rates for accommodations and tours. Just be prepared for some rainy days and possibly less optimal diving conditions due to rougher seas.

Places To Visit & Where To Stay In Dauin, Philippines

Apo Island

Apo Island is undoubtedly the crown jewel of Dauin. This small volcanic island is a protected marine reserve and offers some of the best diving and snorkeling experiences in the Philippines.

I spent almost all my time in Apo Island scuba diving and snorkeling during surface intervals. My family came too, and they went snorkeling. We saw lots (yes, lots!) of sea turtles in the shallow water while snorkeling.

The coral reefs here are among the oldest and most diverse in the country, home to hundreds of species of fish and other marine life.

If you like the edible seaweed “Lato” or have tried the sumptuous “Lato Salad”,  you’ll find plenty of “Lato” here. You’re not allowed to take them, though. (But if you ever get stuck on this island, you know you won’t starve.)

The island also has beautiful beaches and hiking trails that provide stunning views of the surrounding sea.

If you’re into marine life, the Dauin Marine Sanctuary is a must-visit. This protected area is where you will see thriving marine life and coral reefs. It’s a fantastic spot for both diving and snorkeling.

You can also join one of the educational tours they offer to learn more about marine conservation and the efforts to protect these delicate ecosystems. It’s a meaningful way to enjoy the beauty of Dauin while supporting its preservation.

Malatapay Market

If you’re looking for a real taste of local culture, don’t miss the Malatapay Market. It’s held every Wednesday—yes, ONLY Wednesdays—so plan accordingly. This lively market is a mix of locals and tourists, all there to buy and sell everything you can imagine.

Vendors even travel down from the mountains of Negros Oriental to set up shop here. You’ll find everything from fresh produce and seafood to handmade crafts and clothes.

It’s such a fun way to see everyday life in Dauin up close, and the perfect spot to try some local street food and chat with the super friendly residents.

Yes, Dauin is considered a safe destination for travelers. The locals are known for their hospitality, and the town has a low crime rate.

Petty crimes like pickpocketing are rare, but as with any travel destination, it’s wise to stay vigilant and follow standard travel safety practices. Keep your belongings secure, avoid isolated areas at night, and be cautious when exploring unfamiliar places.

Dauin also has a strong sense of community, and visitors often comment on the warm and welcoming nature of the residents. Whether you’re in the town center, at the market, or enjoying the beach, you’ll find that the locals are friendly and willing to help.

Emergency services are available, and there are several medical facilities in nearby Dumaguete in case of any health concerns.
