Aloha! Thinking about heading to Oahu?

Excellent choice! No matter if you have a long weekend or a full week to soak in the Hawaiian vibe, this Oahu itinerary will give you plenty of ideas to make the most of your trip.

I traveled to Oahu with 11 family members for a week-long adventure to celebrate my sister’s milestone birthday. Yep, 12 of us. It was like herding cats, but with aloha spirit 😉

We road-tripped around the island, tackled volcanic crater hikes, snorkeled in turquoise waters, and, of course, I couldn’t resist squeezing in some scuba diving at Waikiki’s top dive sites.

From hiking jaw-dropping trails to diving legendary shipwrecks, indulging in garlic shrimp feasts, and chasing those postcard-perfect sunsets—this itinerary ensures you hit Oahu’s greatest highlights, whether you have 3, 5, or 7 days to explore.

So grab your reef-safe sunscreen and get ready to dive in (both literally and figuratively).

Do I need to rent a car in Oahu?

It depends on your itinerary! If you plan to explore beyond Waikiki—like visiting the North Shore, Kualoa Ranch, or scenic coastal drives—a rental car is highly recommended. However, if you’re staying mainly in Honolulu, TheBus, rideshares, and the Waikiki Trolley can work just fine.

What is the best time to visit Oahu?

For fewer crowds and great weather, visit April–June or September–OctoberWinter (November–March) brings big waves to the North Shore (amazing for surfers, not great for snorkeling), while summer (June–August) is busier with families and vacationers.
